Yes. Almost all modern split air conditioning systems are air-to-air heat pumps. They can run in reverse, so the same unit that cools a room in summer heats it in winter.
How it works
In heating mode, the outdoor unit takes heat from the outside air, even when it is cold outside. A compressor raises the temperature of the refrigerant, and the indoor unit releases that heat into the room. In cooling mode, the process runs the other way.
How efficient is it?
A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, so it typically delivers several kilowatts of heat for every kilowatt of electricity it uses. A plug-in electric heater delivers one. Efficiency is shown on the product label as a seasonal rating, and reduces in very cold weather.
Can it replace my heating?
Air-to-air systems heat the rooms they are installed in. They do not heat water, so most homes keep a boiler or cylinder for hot water. In offices, shops and other commercial spaces, air conditioning often provides all the heating the space needs.
